Great Egret

Great Egret

The Great Egret is a large wading bird found across much of Australia. Measuring up to 1.2 meters in length with a wingspan of over 2 meters, it is the largest member of the egret family. Great Egrets are found near bodies of water such as wetlands, lakes and rivers, where they feed on fish, frogs and other small animals. They are easily recognised by their long necks and legs, as well as their white plumage. Great Egrets are relatively common across Australia and are classified as being of least concern on the IUCN Red List. However, they are still subject to habitat loss and degradation, which can impact their populations. Great Egrets are magnificent birds that play an important role in the ecosystems they inhabit.
